When I truly improvise, I am tapping in something that goes beyond my self-image and any worries about what the others are thinking about me. I don’t know what I am doing, I just enjoy what is happening in the now. What is this ‘something’? What is the Source of Creativity? I feel it is something related to the collective consciousness of the human kind. Or more precisely something inside the collective consciousness; in the ancient past the source of inspiration for all the artists was called Muse (Euterpe for the music).
The fact is that as humans we are filling a gap in our consciousness. We feel that there is something else beyond our physical body and personal desires; sometimes we call this God, Spiritual Soul, Higher-Self. I think that the highest state of consciousness for any improvisor is similar to state of hypnotic trance or a ‘medium’.
I guess Mozart wrote his 1st Symphony in a state of ‘automatic writing’. Improvisation and composition are strictly related. Improvisation is not only jazz or rock, improvisation is a state of mind for a musician, is the readiness to let go any control, waiting for Euterpe
